Nepal November

Up

At long last we were able to go to Nepal and see Everest.  Shaun and I flew from London on the 31st October 2007 and then caught another flight from Bahrain to Kathmandu.

nd November, we were given a guided tour of Kathmandu and then explored Thamel.  Both of which proved to be fairly chaotic.

On my birthday we explored Kathmandu on foot and then had an evening meal at the Yak & Yeti

th November, alarm at 4.30am to catch our flight from Kathmandu to Lukla

th November, soon we were crossing a number of suspension bridges on our way to the excellent Zamling Guest House in Namche Bazaar

th November, a rest day in Namche Bazaar.  It is still cloudy so we had not seen any mountains yet.

th November, we were meant to stop at Tengboche but everywhere was full so we continued on to Dewoche and stayed at a delightful basic lodge.

th November, porridge and toast for breakfast and then a walk up to Dingboche arriving at 2pm.  At last the cloud had gone and we could see some of the fabulous mountains

th November, a rest day.  I was not feeling too good and starting to feel the cold.

th November, beautiful scenery as we left Dingboche in the early morning heading for Lobuche at 5018m

th November, a very cold night and I had stomach ache but we continued up to Gorak Shep arriving at 9am and then on to Everest Base camp where a Thai expedition was just packing up to head home.  It was then a long weary walk back to Gorak Shep and our pleasant lodge.

th November, we left our lodge at 5.15am to walk up Kalar Pattar (5540m).  We had the summit to ourselves and incredible views, it was however bitterly cold in the wind.  A rapid descent followed, breakfast at Gorak Shep, lunch at Lobuche and then a walk around to Zongla.  It was so cold here when the sun went down.

th November, alarm at 4.30am and then after breakfast we set off for the Chola Pass.  The last part of the climb up and the first part of the descent were both quite steep but the views at the top made it all worthwhile.  We had to cross a chaotic glacier to reach Gokyo.

th November, we reached Gokyo Ri at about 8.45am.  From here we had the most spectacular views and then it was a long walk down to Dole where we arrived at 3.45pm.  Also in the photographs is our excellent guide Kaila and one of our most helpful porters, Depak.

th November, still very cold at night.  We passed many frozen waterfalls on our way to the Everest View hotel and then to the Zamling guest house in Namche Bazaar.  How wonderful it was to have running water and a proper wash.

th November, a long walk today to Lukla where we arrived at 3.30pm.  We had a short while to view the runway before it became too dark.

th November, our plane was delayed but it gave us an opportunity to watch this small but busy airport.

th November, a chance to enjoy the warmth and peace that the hotel offered

th November, because we had finished two days early we requested an excursion to outlying villages and the Tibetan carpet factory

th November, the local school's playing field and then a walk around Thamel and plenty of haggling over prices.  Finishing with afternoon tea of course

st November, a final taste of the local food before the flight home that night

nd November, back home before mid-day
